In the west of Langenlois, the single vineyard (Ried) Kittmannsberg is shaping the landscape. Mainly loess soil forming big terraces is characterizing this vineyard. The U-shaped form of the hill is leading to a very special microclimate. For this wine only the oldest vines from the highest parts of Kittmansberg are chosen to reach a physoligical ripeness on point, with no Botrytis for a spicy and complex Grüner Veltliner.
After destemming and a short period of resting on the mash, the berries are pressed to start a wild fermentation. Almost a year will pass before the wine is racked off the lees and bottled. Minimum intervention and no fining are the ground rules for making this honest Grüner Veltliner.
The vineyard (Ried) Kittmannsberg is located in the west of Langenlois. It is a very deep and calcareous loess soil that shapes this vineyard terrace. The u-shaped form prevents the vines from wind which leads to a special micro climate that characterizes our Grüner Veltliner. Our vineyard is located on the top of the Kittmannsberg and is in the family’s possession for decades now.
The season started with a very dry spring, that was only interrupted by a cool and wet May. Throughout the summer we experienced some hail on the single vineyards Steinberg and Kittmannsberg, however, we were fortunately spared from bigger damages. Ripeness really accelerated on the back of a sunny and relatively warm late summer. The vintage shows wines with good acidity, yet good ripeness, and therefore we expect a high longevity.
